For the 2018 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony, we developed a special winch system to control a helium-filled whale flying through the stadium. The system had to keep steady tension so the whale wouldn’t drift away, even as a golf cart pulled it.
Because the whale was so light, we needed to create a winch that could apply constant pulling force without sudden movements. The system had to run on batteries and be completely wireless, as it was mounted on a moving golf cart that drove through the stadium during the show.
The result was a stable and elegant flying effect. The helium whale moved smoothly and safely above the crowd, creating a magical moment in the live performance.
